UWF Meeting

Start your year off right by attending the first UWF unit meeting of 2023. United Women In Faith will gather on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 1:00 in the Fellowship Hall. Our speakers will be from three local nonprofits: Girls INC, Community In Schools, and the Boys and Girls Club. You do not have to be a member of UWF to attend this presentation. ALL women are welcome! Come find out how you can be a part of God’s work in our community.

The Chosen Video Series

If you have been watching The Chosen video series, it is as inspirational and captivating as the first two seasons. It’s amazing how many people it is reaching and the lives that are being changed. For those who met with us on Sunday mornings, we will be showing Season 3 videos at our home during the week. Just videos and comfortable chairs! Day and time will be decided by those signing up. Please respond by calling Ned & BJ at 965-4658 or emailing us nedtoms@comcast.net by January 27th so we can get started by the end of this month or beginning of February. Others who didn’t attend before may join us if there is room. (Room for only 8.)

Financial Peace University

70% of Americans were living paycheck to paycheck – then the pandemic hit and inflation began to spiral. Financial Peace University offers timely wisdom, practical, and a fun way to learn about money. Each weekly session starts with teaching on video and is followed by a powerful small group discussion. You’ll see that you are DEFINITELY not alone if you’re struggling in this area. And even if you’re one of the few who isn’t struggling, you’ll still benefit from this powerful material. It teaches you how to apply biblical principles to the way you handle money and how to start truly managing all of the resources God has given you. This class breaks the process down into easy steps that will help no matter where you are. You’ve just got to take it! This class will be held on Sunday evenings from 5-6:30pm in the Fellowship Hall starting January 29th. The cost is $130 per household. Scholarships are available. If you want to get some more information for you or someone you love, just ask Ashley at ashley@richmondcumc.com. Can’t wait to see you all there!

Read the Bible in 2023!

Here then I am, far from the busy ways of men. I sit down alone: only God is here. In His presence I open, I read His book; for this end, to find the way to heaven.” John Wesley knew and lived the Bible. The Methodist movement he started had Bible reading at its core. Let us build this up afresh in the New Year. Will you schedule now time to be with God and His Word every day in 2023? Central will be embarking on reading the Bible through with the ‘One Story that Leads to Jesus’ plan from the Bible Project. This plan can be picked up in the office, found online, or followed in the YouVersion Bible App. You can go over these readings in your small group or at our Fireside Conversations every Monday at 1:30. May the love of God’s word cause us to cry out with Mr. Wesley, “O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be “homo unius libri.”

Creative Hands

There will be no Creative Hands meeting in January. We will meeting again on Thursday, February 9th from 9am thru lunch. We will be having a garage sale in 2023 so start cleaning after Christmas! If you have any questions, contact Shanron Rider

Central Hosting Point in Time Count

Every year, the Federal Government commissions a census of the homeless population to better allocate funding across the country. In Indiana, the Continuum of Care is charged with conducting these counts. This year, that date falls on January 25th. Central will again host the efforts of this count and provide a meal to the workers and homeless. The Emergency Resource Room will open to make sure those on the street have what they need. Please be in prayer for the many homeless neighbors we have in Richmond. If you feel led to join our efforts, please contact Pastor Joseph about the count or Linda Jennings about the meal and hospitality.

Rhythms for 2023

God’s love finds us right where we are. It’s impact can be subtle, profound, and life-changing. Day by day we bask in it. However, the cares, concerns and habits of this world so easily entangle. When we finally look-up again, we might find ourselves at some distance and out of touch of the love which once grabbed ahold so tightly. Discipleship of Jesus involves daily connecting with Spiritual Practices that His life might flow through us. There are daily, monthly, and seasonal rhythms which keep us loving God dearly, seeing Him clearly, and following nearly.

John Wesley gave guidance in these matters to the people called Methodists through the General Rules.   Specifically to our rhythms of discipleship he offered, It is expected of all who desire to continue in these societies that they should continue to evidence their desire of salvation,

By attending upon all the ordinances of God; such are:

The public worship of God.

The ministry of the Word, either read or expounded.

The Supper of the Lord.

Family and private prayer.

Searching the Scriptures.

Fasting or abstinence.”

Wesley offered much more guidance throughout the years, but left this as an overarching and somewhat simple guide to stay connected with the God who loves us and desires our good. If you would like greater peace and deeper faith this year, please contact one of the pastors at Central to meet and learn more about the rhythms and practices which keep us in God’s love.

Longest Night Service – December 21st at 6:00pm

When we look at one another, many of us expect to see a smile on another person’s face and a twinkle in their eye. However, for many, Christmas can feel more like a season of great darkness and shadows. The longest and for many most difficult night of the year is December 21st. The Longest Night Service (sometimes referenced as Blue Christmas) will offer us a way to claim those feelings and still feel surrounded by the compassionate love of God.

We will gradually add furniture and other accessories. Please feel free to direct questions about this project to :Leanne Backmeyer, Mary Alice Bolser, Doug Jamison, or Dave Sheets

Sounds of the Season
The Sounds of the Season Christmas concert is coming right up on Sunday, December 11th at 6:00pm in the Sanctuary. Enjoy the Chancel Choir, Wesley Ringers Bell Choir, Joysingers Children’s Choir and numerous individuals and small groups who will share their musical gifts to help you ring in the season!

11/23/22 Updates

Understanding Where We are

Join us Sunday evening in the Fellowship Hall from 5:15-6:45 on November 27th for conversation and teaching as we continue to seek understanding on our current UMC moment.  We will cover questions, review our history, share the latest news, and cover the relevant Biblical passages as we clarify where we stand. Please keep our denomination in your prayers as we continue to live out our faith in Jesus together here in Richmond and beyond.

Community Prayer Focus

This month we get to join our community in praying for the Community. God’s judgement or blessing on a community is related directly to the morality of its citizens. And don’t forget: Our 24-hour prayer cycle is Monday, November 28th. Please pick up a prayer packet in the hallway or in the church office.

2023 Stewardship

There is still time to turn in your 2023 pledge card! If you need another one, you may pick it up in the church office during our normal business hours. If you have any questions please call the church office at 765-962-8543

2023 Directory

Have you moved? Want to update your photo for our directory? Now is the time! You will also be able to update your information at that time. Don’t have time on those Sundays? Send in a photo to Christin at christin@richmondcumc.com or drop one off in the office. Faith Once Delivered: A Wesleyan Witness Part 6

Recently, 50 plus scholars, theologians, and pastors from varied Methodist/Wesleyan backgrounds gathered for an event called the Next Methodism. There they produced a document called the Faith Once Delivered: A Wesleyan Witness. In the coming weeks, we will cover parts of their work in this blog.

Paragraphs 56-63…Creation

Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.~ Mark 16:15

We are blessed to live in a beautiful world.  Walks through the woods, sunsets painted upon the sky, serendipity in the journey – all of it begun with the Word spoken…’let there be,’ all of it the work of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  We take it for granted as we take the air we breathe for granted for it has always been there throughout our whole existence.  As we pause, and pay attention – we notice a few things.

Our God has ordered creation in a way which engulfs our curiosity and is recorded as the sciences.  The blessings therein and life gained through struggle give us a window into the benevolence and justice of our God.  By making creation good, God has shown us his glory.  By sustaining creation we see our God to be truly a fountain and foundation of life.  By giving us beauty through ongoing processes, we can see God’s grace.  Living in God’s creation, we see potential and purpose, promise and presence.

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.” Psalm 19:1

Challenge – Go beyond the paved paths of civilization and enter again upon the wild woods, walk along the bubbling brook, or gaze across the glassy lake – and ponder the wonders of our God.
