NEWS FROM THE CONGREGATIONAL HEALTH CARE COMMITTEE

HEALTH MINISTRIES

FROM THE PARISH NURSE

Statistics say that 1 in 6 men will get prostate cancer, but if caught early nearly 100% survive. Early prostate cancer has virtually no symptoms. To find prostate cancer in it’s most treatable form, it must be found before symptoms appear. Risk factors for the disease are increased age, African American, obesity, or immediate family members with the disease. It is rarely found in men under 40, usually over 65 is when it appears. African American men have a 60% higher incidence of prostate cancer than Caucasian men and are two times more likely to die from it. Obese men are 33% more likely to die from prostate cancer than their slimmer counter parts. Men with a father or brother with the disease are two times more likely to have the disease then those with no family history.
Talk to your doctor about screening for prostate cancer. Screening doesn’t show whether you have the disease, only whether you need further testing. Screening consists of two exams: a blood test that measures Prostate Specific Antigens or PSA and a physical exam of the prostate. These exams are done together to increase accuracy of the diagnosis. The right age to begin these exams depend on your level of risk. Annual screening by age 50 is commonly the accepted age for the general population. African American men or men with one or more risk factors may begin annual screening at age 40. Discuss it with your doctor. He is your best resource to determine what is right for you.

WHAT IS STEPHEN MINISTRY?
· Stephen Ministry is in some ways a very
old, and a very new form of lay ministry in our church.

· It is very old, because it is how the very
first Christians cared for one another. It was personified in the person of Stephen, the church’s first deacon. Christians reached out to those in need, they ministered to one another as Christ instructed them to do, “Love one another as I have loved you.”

· It is very new, because it is built solidly
on that Biblical message and intensively
trains and prepares lay people to reach
out and care for those who are experiencing problems in their lives, helping to supplement the pastors’ care.

· It is a confidential, on-going, helping
relationship scheduled with regularity
and dependability.

· It is a meaningful way for our church to
strengthen our many gifts by sharing one another’s burdens and joys.

If you feel God calling you to this Ministry please contact one of our Stephen Leaders, Rena Dilworth (962-9214) or Phil Dorrell (962-8543). We are loo
