BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB
CENTRAL UNIT

Before I dive into yet another exciting month of activities, I need to tell you about an earlier event which I previously forgot to include. As you all know Bill Clinton came to Richmond to give a campaign speech for his wife. What you may not know is that the Boys & Girls Club sent several kids to the event. They were fascinated by the proceedings and not only got to see a former President, they got to be involved in the current Presidential election. What a great experience for these future voters.
As I mentioned last month, our Keystone Club has returned from their conference in Anahiem, California. What a great time they had! Since only two out of five of them had ever flown on a plane, I held ‘airport classes’ prior to departure. They all passed with ‘flying’ colors. (Sorry about that, but I couldn’t resist the pun.) They encountered no problems with the planes or airports and they are now all airplane veterans, ready to tour the world.
As all good Keystoners do, the kids attended all the sessions at the conference, learned new things about Keystone, met other kids from around the country and took part in lots of good learning opportunities. Included in the conference were special workshops that took the kids away from the hotel. Some went to Cal-State Fullerton for a college visit, while one took a trip to Anaheim Stadium, where the California Angels play. They toured the facilities and saw a behind the scenes look at how a Major League Baseball team operates. Other fun activities included a three-on-three basketball tournament, a special SMARTGirls session, a foosball tournament, lots of good food and, perhaps best of all, a trip to Disneyland: quite a lot for a three day trip.
Thanks so much to all of you who contributed in various ways to the Keystoners fund raising efforts. Many of you attended our breakfast buffet or bought Discount Cards or Elder-Beerman coupons and several other things that so many church members supported. Without people like you, these kids would’ve missed out on a once in a life time experience.
While the Keystone Club was recovering from their trip, the rest of us had a great time over Spring Break at the Jeffers Club. Many members from Central attended and, despite the rainy weather, we had a great time. Since Larry Stone was away in Washington D.C. with his Torch Club, I got to run things at Jeffers. The highlights of the week were: a pickle-eating contest, sponsored by McDonald’s who donated loads of pickles, our week long Gamesroom Olympics, complete with gold, silver and bronze trophies (well, they were actually plastic, but you know what I mean), sidewalk chalk art contests and field trips to the Cope Environmental Center, the Grossology Exhibit in Muncie, a Pacers Game and the Newport Aquarium. Looking back at this list, it’s hard to believe we actually did all that in one week.
Later in the month Tamie Hughes and Earlham volunteer, Pershanna Ward, helped the Torch Club create a wonderful float for Earlham’s Japanese Festival. The kids had a great time. They sampled Japanese cuisine, tried on kimonos and saw many other activities at the festival. The Torch Club even won the prize for the best—and only—float in the parade.
(Whew) What a month! And I even left some things out so I wouldn’t go past my allotted space.
Thank-you for taking time to learn about the Club.
